We spread awareness about our team by participating in our school's Halloween Carnival! We gave visitors free candy and henna tattoos while telling them about our team's purpose and social media!
Maker Faire
On March 9th, we took part of our school's Maker Faire where people take part in showcasing their inventions and designs. We promoted ourselves by showing how to make lava lamps, and held a small contest for the other participants in the faire. Visitors were asked what project was the most creative, most ground-breaking, and had the best display.
Women's Month
We had a couple of announcements about women established in STEM. Here are a couple of the example paragraphs. Hedy Lamarr was a glamorous star and was also one of the minds behind an invention that provided the foundation for many pieces of technology that we use now such as.Working with musician, George Antheil, Lamarr developed the idea of "frequency hopping," which could encrypt torpedo control signals, preventing enemies from jamming them and sending the torpedoes off course. Since then, Lamarr's spread-spectrum technology has become the foundation for many portable devices that we use to this day, for which she was inducted into the National Inventor's Hall of Fame in 2014. --Xochitl March is Women’s History month. Today’s featured woman is Josephine Cochrane, an American inventor who came up with the idea of a mechanical dishwasher. She made it with a rack that can securely hold dishes while the pressure of the water cleaned them. When her husband died in 1883, she struggled with debt. She worked hard marketing her dishwasher to hotels, and ended up being successful in the end. Her dishwasher was exhibited at the World’s Columbian Exposition, and continued selling it until her death. Her business was then bought by KitchenAid, and continued on as being listed as one of its founders. --Rianne Palecpec
Workshops! April 7th and the 19th, 2017 We invited 8th grade students in our community to come to our school's library to participate in our workshop event. We held various activities for the girls, like the marshmallow challenge, bridge-building, egg drop, and a scavenger hunt. Girls were able to win various prizes from each event, and were given goodie bags as a treat! Since these activities demonstrate STEM skills, we created these workshops to help girls have an interest on activities like these. We also wanted to give them a sense of achievement in these activities as well, making them more motivated for the field.
